Conversation Tables in Maine & New Hampshire

Voulez-vous parler français? French is spoken all over the state of Maine! A grand merci to our friend Cécile Thornton who compiled the following list of French conversation groups; we hope that you find one near you. If you start a French conversation group in your town, let us know and we'll add it to the list.

FRENCH CONVERSATION GROUPS THAT MEET IN PERSON:

Maine:

  • Augusta: at 45 Winthrop Street, French Social Hour… Thursdays at 5:30 pm. Host: Kay Richard krichard.lib@outlook.com
  • Bath: at the Patten Free Library, 33 Summer Street. French Conversation Group meets Tuesdays at 6pm https://www.patten.lib.me.us/wp-content/uploads/July-Calendar.pdf
  • Biddeford: at Alex' Pizza The French Connection meets on the last Tuesday of every month, 6 pm. Contact is Jim Paquette.
  • Blue Hill: at the Blue Hill Library, 5 Parker Point Rd. French Roast a twice monthly French language conversation group every 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month at 2pm in the library's Howard Room. The program is free and open to all. FMI, please call the library at 374-5515.
  • Brunswick: at People Plus, 35 Union St. (for Seniors above age 60): 4th Tuesday every month, 2.30pm https://peopleplusmaine.org/event/cafe-en-fran%C3%A7ais-2
  • Brunswick: at the Brunswick Welcome Center, 220 Neptune Drive. The French Speaking Family Group meets every second Saturday of the month from 2 to 3:30pm. This is a place for families to support their children in maintaining French language skills. Play games, read books and make friends.
  • Edgecomb: at the Edgecomb Community Church, 15 Cross Point Road. They meet Mondays,10-11:30am-Contact Margot Stiassni at domusic123@gmail.com
  • Falmouth: at Falmouth Memorial Library, 5 Lunt Road. French Discussion Group meet on the second Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 6:30pm. https://www.falmouthmemoriallibrary.org/ *
  • Fort Kent: at Nowland Hall at UMFK and the Acadian Archives host a monthly Table française. It is typically an hour-long meeting at lunchtime. The day and time varies from one month to the next. Contact the Acadian Archives / Archives acadiennes - UMFK for more information.
  • Gardiner: at Spindleworks, 221 Water Street. They meet on the 1st Thursday, every month, 1pm.
  • Gorham: at the Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South Street. French Discussion Group meets the 1st Tuesday of every month from 5:30 to 6:30. https://baxterlibrary.org/ *
  • Lewiston: at the Franco Center, 46 Cedar Street The Franco Center’s Parlez-vous? meets at 10:30 am on alternating Thursdays. Contact the Franco Center
  • Lewiston: at Blue Jay Coffee, 189 Main Street: on the 4th Saturday of the month (11am-1pm)
  • Madawaska: Bibliothèque Mikesell at Main St. and 12th Ave. Le Club Français-Maine meets in on the third Wednesday of the month, 6 to 7 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow French speakers and get involved with language initiatives in the Valley.
  • Portland : at the Café Burundi at 261 St. John Street Alliance Française du Maine’s Table de conversation meets on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month
  • Portland: at Nov.el, 643 Congress Street. The “table de conversation” is held every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The café organizes it and a woman named Chantel runs it.
  • Portland: at the AC Hotel, 158 Fore St. Portland Rendezvous is a casual gathering of francophiles and francophones, who meet twice a month on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7 pm during “Happy Hour” at the AC Hotel in Portland’s East End.   • Rockport: at the Public Library, 1 Limerock Street. Practice your French with friends and neighbors who are also fluent speakers. Meets on Mondays and Fridays, at 1:30 p.m. in the Marine Room.
  • Scarborough: at the Public Library. 48 Gorham Road: French Discussion Group Join other French speakers every 4th Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30pm for casual conversation. Beginners and experienced speakers are all welcome. https://scarboroughlibrary.libcal.com/event/14733841 *
  • Unity: at the Public Library, 38 School Street. Meeting on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 1pm. Contact info@unitypubliclibrary.org
  • Waterville: at Holy Cannoli, 70 Main St. Les bavards this group meet every Friday at 10am -11:30. They have been featured in at least two documentaries about French-Canadians in Maine.
  • Wells: at the Public Library, 1434 Post Road. This group meets on Thursdays at 4pm.

New Hampshire:

  • Nashua: A French speaking group (largely of French-Canadian origin) meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 9-11 at Barnes and Noble in Nashua. This is a fun and welcoming group.

FRENCH CONVERSATION GROUPS THAT MEET ONLINE:

  • Cecile Thornton has a group that meets on Zoom every Thursday at 7pm. This group is made up of mostly fluent French speakers from around the world, who just want to get together for friendly conversation. Contact thorntoncecile@gmail.com
  • Kathleen Stein-Smith has groups that usually meet on Wednesdays at 7pm and Saturdays at 1pm. Kathleen leads the group in conversation and has PowerPoint slides to steer the conversation. Speakers of most every level of fluency participate on a weekly basis. Kathleen is very welcoming, and people made to feel comfortable. Not intimidated. Contact kathysteinsmith@gmail.com

  • Salut! In an effort to keep up our French language skills, the Blue Hill Library will host an online French language conversation group on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month, from 2:00-3:00 PM, on Zoom.

    A topic will be selected for each week and we will discuss it complètement en français!
